Eagle Scout Project Dedication and Reveal Party
According to the Boy Scouts of America, only 7 percent of all Boy Scouts ever reach the Eagle Scout rank, and the average age for the achievement is 17. Enter 14-year-old Elijah Kelly, a Boy Scout with a heart for giving back. His young age hasn’t deterred him from setting his sights on becoming an Eagle Scout. His service project involves a local non-profit, Read to Sydney, an organization that provides therapy dogs to help children read “one ‘tail’ at a time.” The non-profit operates the Sydney Reading and Learning Center at West Oaks Mall in Ocoee
One of Elijah’s goals for his project was to collect 500 books for the center, but he met that goal so quickly, he raised it to 1,000, and is well on his way to achieving it with nearly 800 books amassed. Those books will be donated to children who visit the center, as well as at school and library visits. To make the Sydney Reading and Learning Center more comfortable for everyone, Elijah plans to build a table and chairs where parents can relax while their children interact with the dogs. He is also planning a wheelchair-height table for children, with steps for the dogs so they can be at the same height as wheelchair-bound visitors. An ADA-compliant computer table and comfortable mats for the dogs will complete his project goals. And he expects to complete everything by Christmas!
A local computer company was so impressed when they heard of Elijah’s project, and the progress he has already made, they donated two complete computer systems to Sydney’s Reading and Learning Center!
The public is invited to attend Elijah’s Project Dedication and Reveal Party at Sydney’s Reading and Learning Center located inside the West Oaks Mall on Sunday, November 26, from 2 to 4 P.M. The event is hosted by Elijah’s Mom, Paula Frost Kelly, and Thomas Battisto, Read to Sydney’s Founder. Mr. Battisto is delighted that the organization has been selected as the beneficiary of Elijah’s project. Children of all ages are welcome, and the center is Autism-friendly. Battisto is excited about this project, saying “It will help raise awareness of Read to Sydney and its literacy-based mission. We’ll be able to serve so many more children.”
If you’d like to help Elijah reach his goal, please make checks payable to BSA Troop 998 to mail to Read to Sydney, P.O. Box 1519 Minneola, FL 34755. Book donations can be dropped off at South Lake Karate Academy, 2205 Cluster Oak Drive in Clermont, or email email@example.com to arrange for pick up.
